The Geography of Japan

Now when most people think of living in Japan they think of crowded cities which is somewhat true but in actuality Japan has a great amount of open space.

About 75 % of the land in Japan is mountains, which are considered sacred under the Japanese religion of Shintoism. Therefore instead of building on the mountains the Japanese build their cities in the valleys. Land used for residential areas only comes to somewhere around 3% which is why it seems like Japan has such a dense population. All major cities are in the valleys, the capital of Tokyo as of two years ago had a population of 8.4 million. It is a population that keeps growing because everyone keeps wanting to come to Tokyo to work. Which does not help the towns and even cities like Osaka in keeping up their population.

The rest of Japan's land is used for agriculture, mainly rice crops. So frequently when traveling

outside of the cities you will see the rice fields and right now the fields are full of the stocks that look like a green sea when the wind blows.
Japan is not always a bustling metropolis but on occasion it can be a quiet mountain forest or quaint little farming village. So should you go to Japan take some time to escape the cities and explore the other parts of Japan.
